3. Tribute to Our Uncle Kosta
   From Eleni, Theodore, Sophia and Pano
   Our uncle Kosta was our mother’s youngest brother — the last of her siblings to leave us. Born in Athens, as she was, his life took him to Australia, while ours took us to South Africa. Yet across the miles, he and our mother remained close — through letters and phone calls, through their shared memories of Greece, and through a love that distance could never diminish.
   As children, we travelled back to Greece on several occasions so that our mother could see her family. We could not afford to go often, but the probability was with us — Uncle Kosta happened to be there too. Kind, generous, and full of warmth, he made those visits deeply special. Perhaps because he, like us, had built a life away from Greece, he understood our in-between worlds. He was a bridge between the old and the new, the Greek and the English, the past and the present.
   We remember with deep affection our last family trip to Greece, when our mother was so ill. He happened to be there again, and he lifted her — literally and emotionally — carrying her with gentleness and pretending not to see how frail she was. That kindness has never left us.
   In these last years, he endured immense suffering with extraordinary courage. Through illness and pain, he showed the same quiet strength that marked his life.
   To Regina — please know that you are part of our family too. Not even two years ago, when we were in Greece again for a family wedding, it was such a gift that you were there. You made the effort to meet up with me, though we had not seen each other in over four decades, and you recognised me immediately — saying I looked like my mom. We shared stories of our families, and you spoke so lovingly and openly about Uncle Kosta and his health. I will always remember that conversation with gratitude and tenderness.
   We hold you, your daughter, and your sons in our hearts. May you find comfort in the love he gave, and in the love that surrounds you now.
   May his memory be eternal.
